HUICHOL SACRED INDIAN ART AND CULTURE

  

The Huichol Indians of Mexico are an ancient 30,000 year old tribe from the Sierra Mts. in Jalisco and Nayarit. Their  art, visions and ceremonies are interrelated.  In this workshop you will learn more about their spiritual life, the sacred yarn paintings, beaded masks and ceremonial objects.  There will be slides, video and discussion to explore their symbols and yours.  This is a hands-on experience where each of you will create a small yarn painting, using your personal power symbols and vision.

Workshop taught by Larain Matheson who has completed a 6 year apprenticeship with Huichol shamans and artists in Mexico. Her non-profit organization, Four Winds Circle has worked to help the artists and families for over 20 years. She has led numerous pilgrimages to Mexico, and has been an educator for many years in schools and colleges. She produced an award-winning documentary of the Huicholes which is a part of the exhibit in Washington, D.C. at the new Museum of the Native Americans.
